Tip: Still getting a lot of spam? This probably means that some spammers are sending directly to your mail server. You can prevent this by securing your mail server. | When a spam message slips through the filter you can report it to ensure that we block similar messages in the future. Each domain is assigned their own unique email address for the purposes of reporting spam. To see your domain's "Missed Spam" reporting address, go to the Dashboard in your control panel How do I report a "missed spam" message?
- Select the original spam message in your email software
- Use the "Forward" option in your email software to send it to your domain's unique "missed spam" reporting address
Guidelines for reporting "missed spam" messages:
- Do not forward the spam message as an attachment
- Do not relay spam messages directly to your "missed spam" reporting email address (e.g. from your mail server)
- If you have multiple domains, be sure to forward to the correct "missed spam" reporting address.
How the reporting process works:
- When a "missed spam" report is received, we gather as much information as possible about the original message (such as the sender, subject, recipient, etc)
- Using the information that was found our system attempts to find the original spam message that was delivered.
- As soon as the original spam message is found it is forwarded to our spam techs for further review and analysis.
- The spam techs create new filtering rules based on the characteristics of the original message.
Why am I still getting the same spam that I already reported?
There could be several reasons for this:
- The spam you received may not have actually come through our filter. To check if that is the case, look at the Dashboard in your control panel. If any of the reports you sent did not match up with spam that came through our system, you will see a message on your dashboard indicating this issue. To block spam that is not coming through our filter, take a look at the tips we provide on securing your mail server.
- The spam may actually not be the same, it might actually just be very simular. Spammers make small tweaks in their campaigns specifically designed to get around filters.
- There may not be a consenus among SpamHero users that the message you reported is actually spam. Since these rules in our filtering engine affect all SpamHero users, we need to be careful that we do not create rules that block email that others have asked for and want to receive. In cases such as this, see the alternative ways to block spam below.
Alternative ways to block unwanted messages:
- Most legitimate businesses (those that always send from their real email address), comply with "CAN-SPAM" laws and provide a way to unsubscribe to their emailings, and usually provide a link in their emails to remove yourself from their list. Going with this method reduces wasted bandwidth so that the sender no longer sends email to you at all (rather than just filling your quarantine with unwanted email).
- If option 1 is not available or the unsubscribe method is unclear, you can add them to your Blocked Sender list in Spamhero by logging in to your account and going to Settings->blocked sender.
- If you see a pattern of emails coming from a sender that you are unable to block using one of the above methods (e.g. they keep changing their from address), send a few samples to your missedspam address and then drop us an email to let us know about it so we can take a closer look at the samples you sent. Do not send samples directly to our support address as we are creating new rules all the time, and your message may get filtered before we see it.
